from a Myspace blog of Nathan Hall from Dayjams '07.
Dayjams is over.
This year was my last year at Dayjams as a camper. Though camper isn't really the best word to describe it, I guess, since we didn't camp. But enough of that.Dayjams was just awesome. I remember back in my first year, with Inney and Ian four years ago, we were awful. But then again I was only 11 years old and hadn't taken guitar lessons before. Then next year, we were even worse, as the Aces hold the title of "Worst Dayjams Band Ever." I can't believe I was even part of that. But even in those two years, Dayjams provided me with great memories and they were still great experiences that helped my guitar playing. Then, the next year, was Grum Pibal. That was just amazing. We rocked, man. I laughed so much that week it hurt to move my face for several days after it was over. Mike Gentry taught me many things that week, and overall it's one of the greatest weeks of my life. Then there was this last week.We were the smallest Dayjams band I've ever seen, only four people. Austin and Matt were great musicians, especially Austin. He could play some great bass, and even better dominos. Then we had Billy as a manager, who really knew what he was doing and helped bring out our songs. That last day, I wasn't really thinking "This is my last day of Dayjams ever". I was just goofing off. Then, we played our two songs, and it was over. I was sitting in a chair with Alex and Counsler in Training James, and everything got slower as I realized it was finished. I played back all the memories in my head as the Oxy*morons* played their songs, and realized I still hardly knew some of the counslers. Guys like Glen, who I've seen every year but never spoke more than two words to, and Rob, who always pretended like he was sleeping in the Clinic where they were supposed to act out a bad band rehearsal. There was so much Dayjams had to offer, I don't think I could have taken in all the musical knowlege of the counslers even if I wanted to. I was really grateful for Kyle, my soloing is so much better now that I've expanded my range, and it's brought a whole new feel to the guitar, there are so many new things I can do with it. I regret that my band couldn't close the show, although Kik Me seriously ROCKED. They were great. But It was my last year, and I would've appreciated the chance to close out the show. Anyway, I guess I'll wrap up this blog. As I'm writing this I'm still half processing the 7th Harry Potter book, which I finished just an hour or two ago, and I'll probably go on to reread a few interesting parts to that. It's pretty weird, in two days, both Dayjams and Harry Potter ended. It's like my childhood is ending. That sounds pretty lame, but that's what it feels like. Hopefully I'll go on to be a counselor at Dayjams, I should probably talk to Mike about that sometime soon. If I could be a counsler, that would be great, I'd love to have the opportunity to help the new class of Dayjams campers the same way the counslers these past few years have helped me. So, in this blog, I just want to thank Dayjams for being the great experience it was, and for doing its part in making me who I am today.
Dirty Money correspondence: an email from an adoring fan -
>>> "Alex Rampalli" <
arampalli@gmail.com> 12/02/08 2:14 AM >>>Hey,I was just listening to the Sin Embargo/Dirty Money split, and it compelled me to email you.
My friend Travis and I were wondering around aimlessly 5 or so years ago, and happened upon a Dirty Money show in a small ass record store across from a starbucks in Ann Arbor. I can't remember exactly what I was expecting, but it was one of the most exciting, high energy shows I had ever been too (and remains so to this day). I spoke with you and your brother after the show and told you as much so I wouldn't regret not saying it later (also I bought two copies of your CD).
Anyways, I just wanted to write and say thank you for making a record that has stayed with me all this time, and putting on a kick ass live show!
What are you up to these days? Is there any chance for a DM reunion? Probably not, but regardless, you've got a fan for life
Keep on rockin
-Alex
KKDM77's response:
Hi, Alex -
Thank you for writing. This is KK, the former singer/guitarist for Dirty Money and Sin Embargo (even though Sin Embargo technically still exists but is on indefinite hiatus; even though we usually have an annual reunion show every August).
It's great to hear from you. Your email made my day. Glad to hear we made a lasting impression on you.
As a matter of fact, I was listening to that recording a couple months back for the first time in a long while and it brought back fond memories (even though, in my opinion, my vocals sound flat on that recording...).
The show you saw us at happened to be a very memorable one. Not only was it the last show Dirty Money ever played, but we rarely played such "conditions" (ie, record stores to only a few people). We had a great time, though, and one of the most memorable things for me about that show is that I do remember "rocking out hard". Maybe that's because it was our last show, maybe we had some extra angst due to the tensions in the band, who knows.... (the band was crashing and burning due to our drummer's lack of reliability and just all around generally being an asshole).
I'd rather play a second story record shop on some freezing winter night to a handful of audience members totally rocking out, than to a room full of morons at some bar.
I remember we played with Lee Marvin Computer Arm that night, just before they kinda got "big" for a hot second.
Since the Dirty Money/Sin Embargo days, I've played in a few other bands, most notably The 77s, Devil Elvis, KK Dirty Money & Las Drogas (the latter actually reincarnated a few Dirty Money tunes). These bands have had their little slice of success at the local level, played with some notable Michigan bands, more so than Dirty Money ever did.
My brother, Eric (bassist for both bands) currently lives in Oxford, Mi with his wife and daughter.
I've lived/worked in Ypsilanti the past 5-6 years. I was even the sound man for the Elbow Room for about 5 years.
Dirty Money's drummer, last I heard, moved to Ohio shortly after the band's breakup.
But, regardless of how I may sound about the Dirty Money days, they were some good times and some cool tunes.
Check out www.KKipp.com and there are links to a bunch of bands I've been involved in.
Devil Elvis and Las Drogas still play out fairly regularly, as well as a band I play bass in called Sunday Painters.
As a matter of fact, Devil Elvis is playing a big show at the Magic Stick with Gepetto Files and the Amino Acids on Dec 23, if you can make it. It's a good time.
Do you have a myspace or anything like that? If so, hit me up. Dirty Money, Sin Embargo, and all those other bands I"ve mentioned have myspace, etc.
It was great hearing from you. If you catch me at a show anytime, don't hesitate to come up and chat.
take care,
KK
